What I Do vs Your Golf Pro (And Why You Actually Need Both)

I just wrapped up another golf workshop, and without fail, the same question popped up during the Q&A:

“What’s the difference between what you do at CANSPORTS and what my golf pro does?”

It’s a fair question—and an important one. Before we dive into the “why,” let me be incredibly clear: I work with a golf pro. I take lessons. I value their expertise immensely. They’ve helped my game more than I can say (even if my scorecard is still a work in progress!).

But if you want to see real results, you need to understand where the lesson ends and the body work begins.

The Golf Pro: Coaching the Skill

Golf pros are masters of the technical game. They are the architects of your swing. When you’re on the range with them, they are focusing on:

  • Swing Analysis: Breaking down your path and plane.
  • Technique: Correcting your grip, stance, and follow-through.
  • Timing & Skill: Improving the “how” of hitting a ball.

They are coaching the skill of golf. But here is where most players hit a frustrating plateau: Your pro is telling you what to do, but your body literally cannot do it.

When a pro says, “Rotate more,” and your body responds with, “Uhhh—with what exactly?”—that’s the gap.

CANSPORTS: Coaching the Machine

This is where we come in. At CANSPORTS, we don’t look at the ball flight; we look at the biomechanics of the person swinging the club. We figure out what is physically preventing you from achieving that “killer swing.”

We analyze the foundation:

  • Movement Quality: Are your joints moving through their full range?
  • Posture & Footwork: Is your base stable enough to support your power?
  • Efficiency: Where are you leaking energy or compensating?
  • Rotational Capacity: Does your spine and hip mobility actually allow for the turn your pro is asking for?

The hard truth: If the body can’t execute the movement, the swing will always break down.

Strength is More Than Just Muscle

Most people think “getting stronger” for golf means lifting heavy weights. At CANSPORTS, we view strength through a different lens. True golf strength is about:

  1. Motor Unit Recruitment: How effectively your brain “talks” to your muscles.
  2. Timing & Coordination: Engaging the right muscles at the exact millisecond they are needed.
  3. Sequencing: Moving from the ground up in a fluid chain.

We don’t tell you to “try harder.” We train the right muscles, at the right time, in the right sequence.

The Formula for Failure: > Strength without Coordination = Compensation Compensation = Inconsistency + Injury

Is Your Body Compensating?

If you’ve ever finished 18 holes and felt it all in your shoulders, or dealt with that nagging lower back tightness, that isn’t just a “swing flaw.” That is your body compensating for a lack of connection.

After 15+ years in this industry, I can tell you this: You aren’t missing effort. You’re missing connection.

How We Build the Foundation

We bridge the gap using a specialized trifecta:

  • Pilates: For deep core stability and spinal articulation.
  • Movement Therapy: To erase compensations and restore natural flow.
  • Strength Training: To solidify your power and control.

The Bottom Line

You can’t build a high-performance swing on a body that doesn’t move well.

If you’re lucky enough to have a golf pro who understands both technique and biomechanics, you’re already ahead of the curve. For everyone else, this is how you win: Do the body work here, take that new mobility back to your pro, and watch everything finally click.
