CANSPORTS Helps You To Be Able To Swing
I just finished running another golf workshop, and with the season right around the corner—or for the lucky ones, already in full swing—everyone is itching to get back on the green.
But first, can we talk about Calgary for a second?
- Yesterday: +20°C and sunny.
- Today: A snowstorm is rolling in.
Training here is basically a weather-based obstacle course, but it won’t stop us!
The “Rust” Myth
We’ve all been there. You dust off the clubs, head to the first tee, and tell yourself: “I just need to swing the rust out.” Then, after a few holes of slices, hooks, and balls mysteriously landing in fairways three zip codes away, you realize something is off.
Maybe your lower back starts to “tweak” just to keep things interesting.
Here’s the truth (said with a lot of love): It’s probably not rust. It’s your mechanics.
The “Middle Manager” Problem
Most golfers think power is a product of the arms, the shoulders, or simply “swinging harder.” That mindset is exactly why those slices happen.
In reality, power comes from the ground up. Your swing is a sophisticated chain reaction:
- Feet: They connect you to the ground.
- Hips: This is your engine—where the force is generated.
- Core: This is the bridge that transfers that force.
- Shoulders: They simply deliver the message.
Think of it this way: The shoulder is NOT the boss. It’s just the middle manager trying to keep everything together. When the “boss” (your hips and feet) isn’t doing the work, the middle manager gets stressed, overworked, and eventually breaks down.
Why Harder Isn’t Better
When this chain reaction fails:
- You lose power.
- You lose consistency.
- Your body starts “improvising” (and your body is a terrible improv actor).
After 15+ years of working with golfers at CanSports, I see the same pattern: people spend hours practicing their swing instead of fixing the body that is creating the swing.
You keep swinging harder, thinking effort is the answer, when the reality is that your body simply doesn’t have access to the movement required for a fluid stroke.
The Real Question
Instead of asking how to hit the ball further, ask yourself:
“Can my body actually do what I’m asking it to do?”
If the answer is “I don’t know” or a resounding “No,” that’s where the real work starts. Stop fighting the “rust” and start building a body that can handle the game.
