At 51, I never thought menopause would hit me this hard. I mean, I’m in the health and movement business. I run women’s health retreats, for heaven’s sake! I eat well, move daily, and know all the “right” things to do. But here’s the thing about menopause—it has no bounds or boundaries. It doesn’t care how fit, wealthy, healthy, or mindful you are. The only requirement it has? Ovaries.
And when it hits, oh, it hits. For me, it’s been lack of sleep, brain fog, irritability, and that zombie-like drag-through-the-day feeling. This isn’t just a blip in energy—it’s a full-on recalibration of mind and body.
Why am I bringing this up now? Because I recently reconnected with a friend I hadn’t spoken to in ages. When we finally talked, she admitted she wasn’t in a good place. Her doctor put her on antidepressants right away. Now—there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that choice. But what struck me is that no one asked her, “Could this be perimenopause?”
Ladies, here’s the truth: at this stage of life, the hormonal shift will make itself known for most of us. For some, it’s subtle. For others, it’s like the proverbial “shit hitting the fan.” If you’re lucky enough to feel amazing—fantastic. But if you don’t, please seek help. Look at all the angles—nutrition, movement, stress, hormones, emotional support—and get the care you deserve.
Menopause doesn’t discriminate, but it also doesn’t have to take us down. The more we talk about it, the more power we take back.
