I just wrapped up another golf workshop, and without fail, the same question popped up during the Q&A:
“What’s the difference between what you do at CanSports and what my golf pro does?”
It’s a fair question—and an important one. Before we dive into the “why,” let me be incredibly clear: I work with a golf pro. I take lessons, I value their expertise, and they have helped my game immensely. (You might not see it on my scorecard just yet, but trust me… it could be much worse!)
The Pro’s Domain: The Skill of the Swing
Golf pros are masters of their craft. They are the go-to experts for:
- Analyzing your swing mechanics.
- Correcting technical flaws.
- Improving timing and skill.
- Helping you visualize what a perfect swing should look like.
They are coaching the skill of golf. But here is the gap that most amateur (and even seasoned) golfers run into:
Your pro is telling you what to do… but your body physically cannot do it.
It’s that classic moment on the range: your pro says, “Rotate more,” and your brain sends the signal, but your body responds with, “Uhhh—with what exactly??”
The CanSports Difference: Building the Foundation
This is where we come in. At CanSports, we don’t look at the ball flight; we look at the human machine. We figure out exactly what is preventing you from achieving that killer swing.
We analyze:
- Your Biomechanics: How your joints move (or don’t move).
- Movement Quality & Posture: From your head down to your feet.
- Efficiency: Identifying where you are “leaking” energy.
- Compensations: Finding where one body part is working overtime because another is stuck.
If your body lacks the internal range of motion to rotate, no amount of “trying harder” will create a better swing. The swing will always break down at its weakest link.
Strength is More Than Just Muscle
A common misconception is that “golf fitness” just means lifting heavy weights. At CanSports, we view strength through a different lens. To us, true strength is:
- Motor Unit Recruitment: How effectively your brain “talks” to your muscles.
- Timing & Sequencing: Engaging the right parts in the right order.
- Coordination: Moving with fluidity rather than friction.
The Golden Rule: * Strength without coordination = Compensation
- Compensation = Inconsistency + Injury
Are You Compensating?
If you’ve ever finished a round and felt it all in your shoulders, or dealt with a nagging neck or lower back tightness, that isn’t just a “swing flaw.” That is your body compensating for a lack of connection.
After 15+ years in this industry, I can tell you this: You aren’t missing effort; you’re missing connection.
Our Toolkit for Your Game
We use a specialized blend of Pilates, movement therapy, and functional strength training to build your foundation:
- Movement: Restoring the ranges you need.
- Stability: Creating a “quiet” core to rotate against.
- Control: Ensuring you own every inch of your motion.
The Winning Partnership
You can’t build power on a body that doesn’t move well. If you are lucky enough to have a golf pro who understands both technique and body mechanics, you are already ahead of the curve.
For everyone else, this is how you bridge the gap: Do the body work here at CanSports, take that improved mobility back to your golf pro, and watch how quickly things finally click.
